Exfoliation is one of the most important skin care techniques to prevent or remedy a variety of skin conditions. It is a necessary process to get the blood flowing in the face and remove grime or dry skin cells. With years of experience as a licensed esthetician, I have seen how exfoliation can transform the skin! I want to make it easy for you, which is why I am sharing these home skin care exfoliant recipes for all skin types.

Normal , Dry or Oily Skin

home skin careLet’s start with the recipe for normal to dry skin. You will only need two to three ingredients: a packet of brown sugar, olive oil and lemon. Tip: only use the lemon if you have oily or acne-prone skin.

  • Pour 2 tablespoons of brown sugar into a small mixing bowl.
  • Add 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • Stir until it creates a paste.
  • For oily skin: add a generous squeeze of lemon or lime and stir.

Fun Fact: Sugar is a humectant that draws moisture from the environment into the skin.

Applying your Exfoliant

You should use your exfoliant as part of your normal shower routine. Use your normal cleanser on the face and wash off with warm water. Take your mixture and rub it on your face, neck and chest. For best results, use a gentle, circular motion as you rub the sugar, lemon and olive oil mixture into your skin. This will help remove the dead skin cells and stimulate blood circulation. Rinse your face off with warm water, pat dry with a soft towel and apply your moisturizer and sunscreen.

Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive skin, you will need to use the instant oatmeal and water recipe so you do not irritate your face. Pour 2 tablespoons of oatmeal into a small dish and add 1-2 tablespoons of water. Stir until it creates a paste. Apply to clean skin using very gentle movements, avoid the eyes and under eyes, as these are extra sensitive areas. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and you’re all set!

Oats can be used to soothe sun burnt skin due to its soothing, healing and moisturizing properties.
